WCS Library

Hi! I am Penny Manning, the library media specialist for Wayne Central School. This is my third year in the library, and I’m enjoying it tremendously! Prior to becoming the librarian and test coordinator, I taught English at Wayne County High School for 13 years and Waynesboro Middle School for 3 years. Reading is a passion of mine, and I hope that I can pass that book joy to our students at Central when they visit the library. I also hope they will realize that reading is the key to unlocking their future potential in so many ways. Whether they are diving into timeless classics or discovering new favorites, I strive to make the library a welcoming place for exploration and learning. I work closely with our teachers to support their classroom reading efforts, offering engaging library lessons, and weekly library time to help students reach their AR goals.
Mission Statement of Wayne Central School Library Media Program
The Wayne Central Elementary School library is committed to assisting our students and staff by instilling a lifelong enjoyment of reading while using literacy skills and a collaborative approach to instruction based on the curriculum established by our school and our district while providing access to quality print and non-print materials and technology.
Objectives
The goals of the media specialist are::
Goal 1: To teach students to access, evaluate, and use information.
Goal 2: To maintain a well-balanced collection of media appropriate to the needs of the school.
Goal 3: To assist in locating and using instructional materials.
Goal 4: Extend classroom studies and further personal interests in order to allow an enjoyment of reading.
Goal 5: Offer makerspaces, STEAM/STEM activities, and art to carry the love of literacy through meaningful learning experiences (when applicable and appropriate)
Library Media Program
The Library Media schedule consists of library class, open checkout, and reserved library time. During library, the students will check out books, listen to a story, and/or have a skills lesson. Students can use open checkout and reserved library time to research, check out books, or take an AR test. The library class schedule will run according to the school’s clock.
Events are held for library programs such as AR celebrations per 9 weeks, Scholastic Book Fair, special guests, Read Across America, and Magnolia Award voting.
Programs that are used in the library are Accelerated Reader. Destiny is used as the circulation program which allows students to use the catalog search to view books that are available at Wayne Central School.
Library Media Center Hours of Operation
The Wayne Central Library Media Center is open from 7:40 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. every school day. Students must come with a purpose for learning or with a classroom pass for checkouts. Faculty members are welcome to browse and pick up materials in person or notify me by forms or email.

Accelerated Reader
Our Accelerated Reading Program is underway! We encourage all of our scholars to try to reach and exceed their Iindividual goals with 85% accuracy or higher on each test. Student's progress will be monitored weekly and those who meet their goals with 85% accuracy or higher will qualify for incentives at the end of the Nine Weeks period. Are you ready to take your test? Access the quiz at Renaissance Place Learning.
How Can I Help My Child With A.R. at Home?
- Students may read books from home or the public library, but A.R. tests can only be taken on a school computer during school hours.
- If you want to check the level of an A.R. book, you can search for it using AR BookFind.
- Encourage your child to read at home for 20-30 minutes each night.
- When they complete the book, ask them to retell the story to you.
- Encourage them to take their time on their A.R. test when they return to school.
